Follow this to create a google sitemap for your magento ecommerce shopping website.

Step 1: using FTP create a folder called 'sitemap' on the installation/base folder (where your website is installed). Then create 'sitemap.xml' file under that folder. Give write permission (777) to both file and folder so, the magento can write/edit the sitemap.

Step 2: Goto: Admin / System / Configuration / Catalog / Google Sitemap

Here modify options as you wish and then enable 'Generation Settings'.

Step 3: Goto: Admin / Catalog / Google Sitemap

If you haven't created google sitemap beore, just click on the button "Add sitemap" which is on the right top of grid.

give filename as "sitemap.xml" and path as "sitemap/"

After adding sitemap, you will get 'generate' link, you can click on the link to refresh your sitemap file and it will continue to refresh automatically on time interval you set on step 2.

If you don't see generate link, then you can manually visit this link to create one: http://yourmagentowebsite.com/index.php/admin/sitemap/generate/sitemap_id/[Id of the sitemap from step 3]/

step 4: check your newly created sitemap at: http://yourmagentowebsite.com/sitemap/sitemap.xml and if everything looks ok, then add it to search engines. at: Google Webmaster Tools,Bing Webmaster Tools and other search engines. You can bulk submit/ping your rss to different search engines and directories here for free: Bulkping - Free Online RSS Submit
